Saatchi & Saatchi Risk Ads

Saatchi & Saatchi Risk Ads

Am I the only one who finds this ad a little strange?

The ad, one of three, is from a series put together by the legendary Saatchi & Saatchi ad agency for the Risk board game. Simple premise; show obviously strange mashups of people from one country or society very obviously ‘ruling’ over the territory of another. Indians in control of China, Africans ruling over England, and in the image above, the Middle East ruling over America.

Draw your own conclusions on this one, but the interesting question that occurred to me was what does it mean if they know that we know that they’re just doing it for shock value to increase interest in the brand? Thoughts?

My first conclusion is that had I run across this ad in the wild I would not have thought it obviously strange and certainly not shocking. Shows how little I know about cultural tropes that I don’t recognize the Oval Office.

Second conclusion is that I still wouldn’t have found it shocking. I suppose I am too removed from the “War On Terror” line of thought to jump from Arabic imagery to terrorists without an intermediary.

I dodn’t notice the logo in the corner and thought this was some kind of commentary on kissing the ass of the Saudi royal family.

I think it’s the classic satirical *nudge nudge, wink wink* shock value - let’s encourage the audience into a smug state, content with their sophistication, without actually challenging colonial powers, cultural stereotypes, etc etc.

You pose a very good question.
