Steampunk Laptop

Steampunk Laptop

A group called Monkey Farm over at Ironwork.jp have posted photos of an absolutely gorgeous steampunk laptop. Not only is it one of the most beautiful steampunk sculptures I’ve seen in recent days, but it is apparently a fully functional laptop.

I agree with Cory over at BoingBoing, I would carry this thing everywhere.

A translated version of the page is here.

Polar Rose - A Photo Search Engine

Thomas In The Rain by jclutter

Thomas In The Rain by jclutter

Polar Rose is one of the more interesting takes on the technology of search engines that I’ve seen in quite some time. Rather than search websites, they will be employing facial recognition technology to allow people to search photos looking for a particular person.

It will apparently work for Flickr, 23, Kodak, and most other photo sites.

This is accomplished by releasing it as a browser plugin, presumably in the form of a Firefox extension and an IE7 one someday. While it has not yet been released, I have signed up to be notified when it is.

Details are sparse at the moment, but when there are more I expect to be informed. So you can expect some more information on this bee-yatch when it becomes as available as your mother was last night.

If nothing else, this will probably change the definition of ‘vanity search’.

New Bravia Ad Launch

Sony Advert Toryglen - Glasgow by Lyndsay

Most of you probably remember the absolute gorgeousness of Sony’s Bravia Bouncy Balls Commercial from last year, because I tend to show it to people almost incessantly.

A couple of months ago it came to light that Sony had taken a building scheduled for demolition in Glasgow and wired it up with exploding buckets of colourful paint to film for their new commercial.

Fan-videos of it taken by observers with digicams showed up all over YouTube and Google Video, with a lot of people anticipating the finished product. Well the wait is no more. The ad is now online.

Download the new Sony Bravia colour commercial. It’s also available in 1280×720 Quicktime HD for all you HD whores.

A Blind Camera

Sascha Pohflepp's Blind Camera

Jhayne pointed me at this interesting little piece of work from a German art student named Sascha Pohflepp. It’s another strange camera, but not one that takes your own photos. What makes this camera unique is that it takes other people’s photos. When you press the shutter button, rather than recording a photo, it records the exact moment when you pressed the button.

It then immediately begins to search the internet for photos that were also taken at that exact same moment. When it finds one, which can take time since people have to go upload the photos, it will display the found photo on the LCD screen.

This makes me think of Flickr’s recent feature addition of geotagging. In addition to searching for photos based on subject, composition elements, style, and colours, you can now search for photos in terms of where they were shot with geotagging. This strange camera allows you to search for when they were shot.

I anticipate the next search add-on will be the ability to search for why a picture was taken.

The fine folks over at We Make Money Not Art also covered this recently.
