Quick Tip: Alternate Use for Your Tripod Bag

I’ve already covered before that I hate carrying things, but sometimes it’s a necessary evil. To avoid carrying both a tripod case and a camera bag, I never keep the three-legged beast in the bag it comes with. Instead, I’ll use the tripod bag to hold extra lenses and lighting equipment.

Suddenly, you’re carrying much wider variety of equipment, with a minimum of inconvenience. As for where your tripod goes, it’s up to you.

If I’m using it, I’ll carry my tripod resting on my shoulder with the camera attached. Otherwise, I’ll just hang it off the bag strap. It works excellently and gives me a lot more freedom in the photos I take. Remember to be more careful with the tripod case though, it’s not padded like your camera bag.

What do you think, good idea or bad idea?

Bad idea. Like you said, the tripod case isn’t padded. Better safe than sorry, especially when packing L-series lenses or other pricey gear.

I think it’s a good idea…*if* you have your gear covered with a rider on your insurance policy. I hate carrying my tripod slung over my shoulder with the camera attached because I’m leery that the camera could slip off thanks to the ball mount’s quick release. But again, insurance to the rescue.

A lack of external padding is a problem, but so is the lack of internal compartments. Having a couple of expensive lenses and a flash or two all chucked in together banging against each other can’t be good, can it?

I guess I should have clarified. I don’t use it for expensive equipment, or even a lot of it. I like to toss my 50mm, a polarizing filter, and maybe my Vivitar 285HV flashgun in there when I wander around. Nothing fancy, nothing that can’t survive a bump or two.

And I do have everything covered by insurance, so I’m not too worried about it.
